Strong electron-photon interaction mediated by dark plasmon    [PDF]

Kin Hung Fung, Anil Kumar, Nicholas X. Fang
Enhancing the interaction between electron and photon is a crucial issue for single-photon generation and detection technology. Plasmonic resonances can strongly enhance such an interaction by sub-wavelength enhancement of photonic local density of states, which takes an important role in the processes of spontaneous emission and stimulated emission. Dark plasmon mode in nanostructures is a very special type of resonant mode that leads to high gain factor in spaser. Here, we show that dark plasmons in metal bowtie nanoantenna can strongly enhance the interaction between moving electron and photon even though dark plasmon itself interacts weakly with photon. Such a counterintuitive experimental result is well-explained by our eigen-response theory as well as numerical simulations. Our discovery may offer new opportunity to improve single-photon emission and detection in nanostructures.
