Design and theory of a graphene-based coherent terahertz emitter    [PDF]

We discuss the operation principle and propose a detailed design and a theory of a graphene/boron-nitride-based emitter of coherent electromagnetic radiation. The operation frequency of the device can be tuned by an applied dc voltage in the range from $\simeq 0.1$ up to tens of terahertz. The estimated power of the emitted radiation is of order of 0.5 W/cm$^2$. The operation temperature is close to the room temperature and the required technological processing is easily realisable nowadays. The proposed device is few-atomic-layers-thin, light, almost invisible and bendable. It may completely cover the needs of science and technology in the sources of terahertz radiation and be used in a large variety of applications in security, telecommunication, medicine, astronomy and many other areas.
