Dephasing of a nanomechanical resonator subject to adsorption, diffusion
and desorption of small particles

I study the response of a driven underdamped resonator whose vibrational frequency fluctuates due to random adsorption, diffusion and desorption of small particles. This type of frequency noise occurs in mass measurement experiments using nanomechanical resonators. I present a theoretical model for the frequency noise and calculate the oscillator susceptibility function for weak driving fields. I discuss the effect of particle diffusion in the oscillator susceptibility for the case where the adsorption and desorption rates and the oscillator damping rate are smaller than the maximum frequency shift caused by a single particle adsorption event.
