Studies on infinite long monatomic carbon chains based on the hybrid density functional calculations show that the direct band gap can be continuously tuned from 1.58 to 3.8 eV by stretching the chains up to 10% elongation and pairs of sharp peaks locate at the well separated Van Hove singularities in the density of states, which are enhanced in the stretched chains, suggesting potential applications to the nanoscale lasers and other optoelectronic devices with tunable wavelengths from 321 to 785 nm.
