Photoluminescence spectra of quantum wells containing a 2D electron gas of intermediate density (~10^{11} cm^{-2}) show a characteristic structure that was interpreted by different authors in rather contradictory ways. We made use of the enhanced spin splitting effect in structures with some Mn inside the quantum well and observed a significant magnetic-field behavior of the photoluminescence features. Based on these observations and some earlier finding by other authors, we report a new understanding of the typical photoluminescence spectrum in terms of the four-particle excitations of the 2DEG, the Suris tetrons, which were up to now only predicted theoretically. Some characteristic PL features are attributed to emission of these quasi-particles yielding different final states.
