We report about the fabrication and characterization of nanoparticle thin film superlattices, which show two of the three thin film growth modes, i.e. Volmer-Weber and Frank van der Merwe growth. In addition three-dimensional mesocrystallite growth is evidenced. The formation into different systems is accomplished by tuning the particle-to-substrate interaction. The understanding of the mechanisms ruling nanoparticle self-assembly represents an important step toward the fabrication of novel materials with tailored optical, magnetic or electrical transport properties.
