H-Si(100) surface

Here we report the observation and control of single electron charging of atomic Dangling Bonds. The tip of a scanning tunneling microscope is placed adjacent to the dangling bond to serve as a single electron sensitive charge-sensor. Three distinct charge states of the dangling bond, positive, neutral and negative are discerned. Charge state populations are directly extracted from the data and simulations are applied to extract the characteristic timing of the single electron dynamics.
